Format Change for Parent-Teacher Conferences

Dear Parents,

Beginning in February 2016, Madison Jr Sr High School is changing the format and structure of our Parent-Teacher Conferences.  The new format is designed with the following goals in mind:

  • Creating more meaningful individual plans of study

  • Increasing attendance at conferences

  • Increasing career pathway and dual credit course enrollments

  • Increasing Flint Hills Technical College enrollment

Currently, all 7-12th grade students complete an Individual Plan of Study (IPS).  As part of the students’ IPS, they complete a career interest inventory, explore occupations, explore training options and complete a plan for a course plan for 7th-12th grades.  Additionally, they plan for post-secondary training.  In the 21st century, parents have access to their students’ grades on a daily basis.  The ability to communicate with teachers regularly throughout the year changes the needs, efficiency, and effectiveness of the traditional parent-teacher conferences.   ACE (Academic and Career Exploration) Conferences will give parents, teachers, and students the opportunity to review and discuss academic progress, career interests, employability skills, and set career and academic goals for future years.

Students have been paired with an “Advisor Teacher”.  Families with multiple students will have the same advisor teacher.  A designated time will be scheduled for your student’s ACE conference with their advisor teacher.  We would encourage both the student and parent to attend.  The ACE conference will last approximately 20 minutes.  Additional time will be built into the schedule to visit with your student’s individual teachers as needed.  I would encourage you to call or email your student’s teachers at anytime.  You do not need to wait until conferences.  Additionally, post-secondary school resources will be available to parents throughout the evening.  For families with multiple students in 7th-12th grade, your conference times will be scheduled in back-to-back sessions to help ensure the most efficient use of your time.  School staff will be contacting you in the near future to schedule your ACE conference.  A more detailed schedule will be sent out in the near future.

It is our sincere hope that the ACE conferences will lead to meaningful dialogue between student, parent, and teacher in the areas of academic progress, career interests, employability skills, and career and academic goals.  We hope that you will find the new format more meaningful and a more efficient use of your time.  Please feel free to contact me at anytime with questions.
