After School App Warning

Dear Parent(s):

I hope that each of you had an enjoyable and restful Thanksgiving Holiday.  It has recently come to our attention that an app called “After School” is being utilized by students at Madison High School.  The application essentially serves as an anonymous online bulletin board where students can post anonymous messages (both positive and negative).  We are working to restrict access of this application with our filter.  However, students would still be able to access the application with their own personal devices outside of school.  We have also been in contact with the technology support staff of “After School” to share examples of inappropriate messages that have been posted and requested that they be taken down.  The anonymity of this application provides a greater affinity for students than some other social media options.  It is my feeling that students utilization of this app will lead to more negative experiences than positive ones.  We have encouraged students not to utilize this application, but if they are to report posts that are inappropriate or harmful to other students.  Parents to have the option to block this app on their students’ personal device (phone, etc.)  See details at  As with any medium (paper, iPad, etc.) there are positives and negatives that exist.  Just as issues with one app are addressed another one can pop up.  In today’s world, discussing and monitoring your children’s use of technology is just as important as monitoring their “person to person” social interactions.  I do not feel like we have seen an increase in bullying since technology has become more prevalent, but the medium in which these behaviors takes place has changed.  Additional resources for parents can be found under the Technology and Safe, Smart, and Social link under the Parent Resources tab on the school website  Please let us know if you have any questions or we can assist you in anyway.
